Young man using adapted gaming controller. Inset shows close of of his hands and a screen showing Minecraft

Chris has doubled his gaming fun thanks to ongoing support and advice from our specialist assessment team.

Chris has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and our team first helped him with a carefully-configured adapted gaming controller setup in 2020. He’s since found gaming more difficult, so his family got back in touch to see whether we could help again.

They asked if the existing switches on his setup could perform two actions rather than one, so the team introduced him to the Xbox Accessories App, which he used to redeploy one of his switches as a Shift button. To free up his fingers even more, we recommended a latchbox that could effectively hold down the Shift when required. The Shift also doubled the usefulness of his chin joystick by swapping it to act as the Right Stick for camera movement.

This extra boost to Chris’s gaming abilities has allowed him much more freedom to explore and enjoy games like Minecraft. He’s spent hours immersed in the game, delighted to be using his skills and creativity again.

“We have a very happy young man here ❤️” said his father, “It’s something he thought he’d never do again. Thank you for everything.”

We’re so glad we could help Chris shift up into greater gaming independence and inclusion, and we’ll be there for him if he needs our support in the future.
