Images above: One of the controller setups is a DualSense switch interface paired with an adapted controller. It gives Miro the scope and flexibility he needs for the more complex games he wants to play on his PS5.
Miro’s making the most of his favourite games again, including Baldurs Gate 3, thanks to a complementary pair of customised assistive gaming setups created by our specialist occupational therapists.
Miro loved gaming on his PS5 until his spinal muscular atrophy made using a standard controller too tricky. He could handle the joysticks, but moving his fingers to access the other controls was difficult, especially if he was tiring.
He’d tried a few assistive gaming products with limited success, and contacted us to ask if there were other options that could make more of his abilities. Our specialist assessment team worked with him via several remote support calls, curating and evaluating a series of technology loans. These gave him a successively increasing amount of gaming freedom until eventually a combination of two customised assistive gaming setups gave the best results; one with a comprehensive range of switches for enjoying more complex games, and one with lighter-touch controls so that he can play even when he’s more fatigued.
“Thank you so much for your support with all this,” said Miro. “It’s been liberating being able to play again. I’m just starting to play Baldur’s Gate 3!”
Finding the right combination of technology that offers a path to maximum gaming freedom can be a costly, wasteful and dispiriting process for gamers with disabilities. It’s an honour for our team to make that journey easier for dedicated players like Miro by offering advice, experience, equipment loans and the promise of lifelong help and support.
We simply wouldn’t be able to offer this help without the support of our amazing friends in the global games industry and of course the many gamers, communities and individual donors who help fund our work and keep our services and resources free of charge. Thank you – you’re truly making a game-changing difference!
Please consider a monthly donation to support our work. Just £15 a month will help us provide free lifelong support to those who need it most, allow us to plan ahead, respond quickly, and reach even more people in need.
